End of year report 2008

First of all, stats for the year:

66 mixes uploaded to www.dunfyboysmixes.mypodcast.com since January with 6315 downloads. Most popular mix is my DJ Shadow mix - 441 downloads - thanks to it getting a mention on solesides.com and proving so popular on pearsontowers.com. Thanks to all who have supported Dunfyboy's Mixes over the past year.

If you've had problems downloading from MyPodcast.com do perceviere. The site has storage and bandwidth issues. This caused a few to jump ship to Podongo.com. However I learned today that Podongo will be closing tomorrow. Credit crunch and all that. I was thinking about leaving MyPodcast.com, but with one of it's main competitors going belly up, who knows.

Happy New Year to all, and thanks again.

Dunfyboy

Just heard from Metrodorus, another MyPodcaster, that he'd been in touch with First Beat Media, the owners of MyPodcast.com, and they'd reassured him the site would continue. Good news.

Dunfyboy's Electro House Mix 3

Download from MediaFire.
Here's the last mix of the year, and possibly the last mix to be hosted on MyPodcast.com. The site has been suffering from more and more technical faults and support is almost non-existent. I've been upping mixes there for a year now and it may be time to find a new host. I'll have to think about it in the new year.

Anyway, the mix. It kinda goes more electro breaks than house at the end, but it's all electro, eh? Apart from the odd track or two, but they're house tunes, if not electro, so it all fits. Whatever, it should keep your head nodding on the drive to visit rellies this Christmas.

Enjoy, Merry Christmas, and TTFN.

It's been a while since I did any trance mixes so I thought I'd throw this together for you.

These tracks are from A State Of Trance Classics volumes 2 and 3, so nothing's too up to date. Quite a few are vocal tracks, which is strange for me, but a nice mix all the same.

If you missed my previous trance mixes, you can get them here.

Dunfyboy's Marc Smith Mix

Download from MediaFire.
Scott Brown may have been better known outside of Scotland and he definitely released (churned out?) more music, but Marc Smith was always the King of Scottish hardcore in my opinion. He was a DJ first and foremost, but even from his first release, "Breakdown", he produced some of the best hardcore tunes and remixes of all time.

So here's a little mix in his honour, featuring his work from 92-97.

Dunfyboy's Finger Lickin' Mix

Download from MediaFire.
I thought I'd better get this mix up by the end of the year as it's a celebration of Finger Lickin' Records, the breaks label who are celebrating their 10th birthday this year. They've released a triple album mixed by Soul Of Man to mark the occasion which you can pick up direct from Finger Lickin' for under £9 or from Amazon for under £7. I've never understood why buying direct costs more than involving a 3rd person. I saved £40 last week by not buying my new monitor direct from HP. I assume they make less profit this way. I'm just glad there isn't a worldwide recession. Idiots.

Anyway, enjoy.

Dunfyboy's Hvnly Brkbts

Download from MediaFire.

Some of these tunes appear on a compilation called Chemical Dance Culture - Test 2: Heavenly Break Beats. A bit of a mouthful, but it did give me the idea for the mix's title.

It's 80 minutes of early happy hardcore and when you listen to the mix, you might notice some D & B influences as most of these tracks are from the time when the breakbeat hardcore scene was splitting into happy hardcore and jungle.

Anyway, enjoy, and remember to not leave a comment.

PS - Defo the last old school mix for a while

Dunfyboy's Naughty Naughty Mix

Download from MediaFire.

I know, I know. I said I wasn't posting any more old school mixes for a while but I'm going to reinstall Windows and as I had a couple of old school mixes already recorded on my PC I thought I'd upload them first.

Besides, the last couple proved so popular (well, 4 people leaving coments is good going in these times of lurkers, leeches and ungrateful cunts), I thought you might like a couple more breakbeat hardcore/early happy hardcore/whatever the fuck you wanna call it mixes.

This one features the 11 Naughty Naughty bootleg 12"s that came out in 93/94. If you've never heard of them, they're basically unofficial happy hardcore remixes of dance tracks from the late 80s/early 90s.

Surprisingly, this is just the 2nd mix on the site with a constant tempo. This time, 160bpm.

Enjoy.

01 - Naughty Naughty 1A (I Need Your Lovin - NRG)
02 - Naughty Naughty 2B (Meltdown - Quartz)
03 - Naughty Naughty 1B (20 Seconds To Comply - Silver Bullet)

Dunfyboy's Old School Classics 2

Download from MediaFire.

OK, after a bit of a lay off, Dunfyboy's Mixes is back in action.

This is the 1st of 2 old school mixes I'm putting up this week. As this one is mostly breakbeats, it seems the natural sequel to my Old School Classics Mix that I posted way back in January, or maybe my Big Four-Oh Mix.

New Mixes Soon

As I predicted, the PS3 has eaten into my spare time. Performance wise, I'd say it's no better or worse than my 360 (hell of a lot quiter though). I prefer the PS3's interface and the pad just feels more natural as I've been playing on one Sony box or another for over a decade so the 360 may be getting eBayed soon.

Anyway, I've been looking out some more old school tunes and hope to get a couple of new mixes up here within the week. After that, who knows what the next mix will be, but it'll be a little more up to date whatever it is.

Dunfyboy's Old School Mix 2

Download from MediaFire.
As I mentioned last time, these tunes were all hits in the dance charts and the proper charts that the big labels spend so much time and money rigging. Top Of The Pops-tastic :)

The exceptions that prove the rule are Flute On and Nightbird. I don't think either artist has ever dented the top 40, but I forgot to include them in the last mix.

While I'm proving the inaccuracies of the mix's title, I wouldn't call the last 3 tracks old school as they came out in 96, but I couldn't be arsed making a "Not Quite Old School Mix". 36 out of 39 isn't bad. Besides, I can do what I want. I'm god around here.

Enjoy

01 - Groove Is In The Heart - Deee-Lite
02 - (I Wanna Give You) Devotion - Nomad
03 - Naked In The Rain - Blue Pearl
04 - Flute On (Voice On) - Secchi

09 - Ride Like The Wind (Factory Edit) - East Side Beat
10 - What Is Love - Haddaway
11 - Hideaway (Deep Dish Radio Mix) - De' Lacy

PS - Don't think I'm gonna get the next mix up before the PS3 arrives, so Dunfyboy's Mixes could be quiet for the next week or two. If you haven't already done so, remember to check the archives. There's bound to be something you'll like.

Dunfyboy's Old School Mix 1

Download from MediaFire.

It's been a while since I've done any old school mixes. I've got another 2 or 3 planned and hope to get them up in the next week or so. I'd better, as the 80Gb PS3 is on order and I plan to lose at least the next couple of weeks of my life to it (£330 for the console, GTA4, MGS 4 & an HDMI cable, if you're interested).

I was going to do a follow up to my Classic House mix, posted back in January (it seems so long ago) but, as the next mix will have a more commercial sound, I've included some "breakthrough" tracks here, too. That's why this mix has some 80s house, a bit of acid, some "cut n paste" tracks, along with stuff that broke though to the mainstream (Top Of The Pops even!).

So, no Classic House Vol 2, just plain ol' Old School Mix Vol 1.

Enjoy.

Dunfyboy's Sugar Hill Mix

Download from MediaFire.

It's been a strange month. I've only upped a few mixes and, as a result, the downloads weren't even in treble figures till a few days ago when my DJ Shadow Mix was posted on the Solesides website. I really need to start spreading the word about my site. If only I wasn't so bloody lazy!!!

This will probably be the last mix of the month. It's a tribute to one of the oldest of old school hip hop labels - Sugar Hill Records.

It's first release, Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight", came out in 1979. It sampled the bass line from Chic's "Good Times" which led to the label being sued. It wasn't the only lawsuit filled against the label in it's all too brief existence. Even Grandmaster Flash sued. This, along with contract disputes, caused many of the artists to leave and the label folded in 1986.

A short but sweet experience then. 20 plus years on, some of the rhymes may sound a little dated (I guess the star sign thing worked with the ladies at the time) and I never could work out why having butter on your toast was bragging or being boastful, but the label gave us some true classics and I think it's fair to say the world of hip hop would have turned out differently without it.

The first Sugar Hill track I heard was as a 10 year old back in 1984. My dad had a C90 he used to play in the car with Kreftwerk's "Autobahn" on one side and various other songs, including "White Lines", on the other. So you can thank my old man for this mix.

Enjoy.

AAAAARRRRGGGGHHHH! More router problems: no wireless connection, dropped lines halfway through an upload. It's doing my head in. If BT ever offer you a Home Hub, tell them to stick it up their arse!!! This mix should have been upped right after my DJ Shadow Mix. Anyway ...

On my travels round the net I stumbled on an old school electro mix by a guy called Bamboo. Check it out at Def Momentum's blog.

It made me want to do my own electro mix, which I kinda haven't done as I wouldn't really class all these tracks as electro (hence the mix name) and "Walking On Sunshine" wouldn't have sounded out of place on my Classic House Mix, but they're all from the early 80s and it all comes together in another awesome Dunfyboy mix. (Nothing wrong with a bit of shameless self-promotion, right?)

There's about a dozen or so songs that feature on both Bamboo's and my own mixes, but I'd still recommend downloading both mixes (mine first, obviously :-)

Anyway, here it is. Enjoy.

01 - Boogie Down (Bronx) - Man Parrish

PS - Don't worry if you think there should've been more from the Sugar Hill label. That's next.

***EDIT*** Blogger have killed Def Momentum's blog. Guess someone reported him for sharing out of print 12"s. Twats. Anyway, if you want to get the page with Bamboo's mix on it, it's still in Google's cache so click here
***EDIT 2*** Even the cached page is gone now, but here's a link I found for it http://collectiveindustries.com/mixes/Bamboo_LastNightADjSavedMyLife_Mix.mp3

Dunfyboy's DJ Shadow Mix

Download from MediaFire.

Well, it's been a while, hasn't it?

When I posted my Nightshift Mix I mentioned it was intended to be a DJ Shadow mix. It started of well but after just 3 tracks DJ Vadim crept in, then Hexstatic, then Depth Charge. You get the idea. So, here, at last, is my DJ Shadow mix.

This mix has a bit of everything - early Mo' Wax head-nodders from "Entroducing" and "Preemtive Strike", more rap (& guitar?!?) orientated stuff from "The Private Press" and "The Outsider" and, of course, a tune or three from his collabaration with James Lavelle on UNKLE's "Psyence Fiction " . There's the dance-floor freindly remix of "Six Days" from Soulwax and Shadow's own remix of Eric B & Rakim's "Let The Rhythm Hit Em". Even Shadow's live version of "Organ Donor" from "Live! In Tune And On Time".

Enjoy. I know you will.

Dunfyboy's Public Enemy Mix

Download from MediaFire.

The most important band in the history of hip hop? Yeah, probably. Maybe even one of the most important bands ever.

Public Enemy have been going for over 20 years now and along the way they've released some of the best rap songs you could hope to hear.

Although their later rhymes may not have the impact of their earlier stuff this mix does have the odd recent tune in it. Most of the tunes though come from their first four albums: Yo! Bum Rush The Show, It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back, Fear Of A Black Planet and Apocalypse 91-The Enemy Strikes Black. These albums are my favourites, maybe because I first heard them as a nipper, maybe because they've been sampled on so many other records that I bought. Who knows? If you want to check out PE, get these 4 first. I've seen them live twice and if you get a chance, I'd recommend it.

Anyway, enjoy. And remember, if you've time to download the mix, you've time to tell me what you think of it.

01 - Public Enemy No. 1
02 - Grand Theft Oil
03 - Terminator X To The Edge Of Panic
04 - Prophets Of Rage
05 - Louder Than A Bomb
06 - Get the F*** Outta Dodge
07 - I Don't Wanna Be Called Yo Nigga
08 - Shut 'Em Down
09 - The Enemy Battle Hymn Of The Public
10 - Give It Up
11 - He Got Game
12 - Rebel Without A Pause
13 - She Watch Channel Zero?!
14 - Don't Believe The Hype
15 - Mind Terrorist
16 - Who's Your Hero?
17 - Gotta Do What I Gotta Do
18 - Fear Of A Black Planet
19 - You're Gonna Get Yours
20 - 911 Is A Joke
21 - A Letter to the New York Post
22 - Nighttrain
23 - Fight The Power
24 - MKLVFKWR
25 - Party For Your Right To Fight

Dunfyboy's Hip Hop Mix 2

Download from MediaFire.
I first heard Ill Culinary Behaviour on DJ Yoda's How To Cut & Paste Vol 2. It's a clever tune with the premiss of Format and Abdominal hosting a dinner party, but they serve up beats & rhymes instead of food & drink. Abdominal's food fascination continued on his debut album "Flowtation Device" with "Fast Food". Ugly Duckling gave us the anti-vegan "Meatshake" and these three tunes start off this mix with a decidedly tasty theme.
I wanted to mix these 3 tunes together, but after that it was just a case of whatever comes next. I try to use different tunes in each mix but you'll notice some of these have been used in other mixes (it was the middle of this mix that made me decide to record my Funk Mix) but like I say, I only got as far as planning the first 3 tracks.
Enjoy

Dunfyboy's Hip Hop Mix 1

Download from MediaFire.

OK. Re-recorded this mix and I'm happier with this now. I dropped Baby's Got Back off the end of the mix and slipped They Reminisce Over You in. Both feature on upcoming mixes anyway, but I figured TROY deserved to be in this one too, as this is a sort of Hip Hop's Greatest Hits mix type thing (not that BGB didn't deserve to be in here, but something's got to give).

You might (should?) know all the tunes on here. If not, you're in for a treat. And if you do, fuck it, you'll download it anyway, won't you?

Remember to leave a comment. It's been weeks since anyone bothered and I'm getting pissed off again :(

Dunfyboy's Breaks Mix 3

Download from MediaFire.

Welcome to Breaks Mix #3. It was going to be called Dunfyboy's Funky Breaks Mix due to all these breaks tunes having such a funky sound (and it would have tied in nicely with the upcoming Funk Mix) but I decided just to mess about with the Breaks Mix 2 cover rather than make up a new one. So here we are.

No apologies for re-using "Feelin Kinda Insane" as this was recorded before the "Insane Bangers" set. In fact, it was using it here that gave me the idea to do the "Insane Bangers" mix.

Dunfyboy's Breaks Mix 2

Download from MediaFire.

Thanks to all who've taken time to post comments. Although plenty of people are still just leeching fucks.

Anyway, here's another breaks mix. Some new, some not so new. I've had Ils's version of Baba O'Riley for a while now so I'm happy to finally get it into a mix. Also good to see the Cut & Run boys release a proper breaks remix of The Streets' "Blinded By The Lights" as I had to just loop the beats from the previous track over the original when I used it on my 1st breaks mix.

The mix starts of at a fairly sedate 132 bpm, although the first track, a breaks remix of the old school classic by Gat Decor is playing at +4% to get the speed up. By the end it's a pretty banging 148bpm. If you like the more banging stuff, check out the mixes by Sketch & Naturally Artificial at the RFL all day podcast.

Enjoy.

Dunfyboy's Electro Breaks Mix

Download from MediaFire.

I've posted a few electro and breaks mixes before. Here's one that should keep both camps happy.

If you prefer your electro 4-to-the-floor check out my Electro House and Mostly Electro House mixes.

If you love your breaks but aren't a fan of electro you might like my Insane Bangers, Breaks or Big Beat mixes.

But, back to this mix. There was going to be couple of extra tracks but I ran out of time (I like to keep my mixes under 80 minutes in case anyone wants to burn them to disc).

Dunfyboy's Insane Bangers Mix

Seems MyPodcast.com is over whatever problems it was having, so here's a little mix to celebrate.

It's the 6 Insane Banger 12"s released on Nut, the Finger Lickin' Records mash-up bootleg off-shoot, mixed by yours truly. Running time is just over 1/2 an hour, but some of the tracks aren't even 2 minutes long so no complaining!

More breaks mixes to come. In the meantime, enjoy.

01 - Hot Dogg - A Skills v Beatvandals
02 - Insane Banger! - Krafty Skillz
03 - Money Banger - A Skillz v Beatvandals
04 - Flow Banger - Krafty Skillz
05 - Strawberry Jam Forever - A Skillz
06 - Superstar - Krafty Skillz
07 - With You - A Skillz
08 - It's Ya Booty - Krafty Skillz
09 - Another One Beats The Dust - Krafty Skillz
10 - Rock The Spot - A Skillz v Nick Thayer
11 - Beat Don't Stop - A Skillz v Beatvandals

14 - Eat My Shorts - A Skillz
15 - $19.99 - A Skillz v Nick Thayer
16 - Feelin Kinda Insane - A Skillz v Beatvandals

PS. Insane Bangers 7 has not long been released, but it's called "LSD" instead of "Insane Bangers 7" so it doesn't make the mix. And, it's not that good :)

The plan was to make this my longest mix yet on MyPodcast.com, but...

With my 40th mix coming up I wanted to do something a little special so I made a double length mix, clocking in at a little under 2 hours 39 minutes (or 2 CDs worth for the old farts out there). The problem (I've just found out) is that MyPodcast only allows podcasts up to 2 hours long. Really should have read that FAQ when I joined up, eh?

Anyway, I've split the mix into 2 so at least you can put it on CDs if you want. This is podcast 39, part 2 will be the actual 40th podcast. If you want to join the files, overlay the last 8 bars of part 1 with the first 8 bars of part 2 (it's in the middle of "Just A Feeling"). I was going to stick the whole thing as a one-er on Rapidshare or MegaUpload and mail a link to anyone who left a email address in the comments, but as nobody (except Dave, cheers mate) ever leaves comments, fuck it, you'll have to do it yourself.

I've posted a few of my old school breakbeat mixes here before. There were the Kniteforce and Impact label mixes along with my Old School Classics mix and a couple of my other old school mixes have had the odd breakbeat hardcore track.

A couple of the tracks from this mix may have appeared elsewhere but where this has happened I've used a different mix or remix this time round, so no "doublers" here.

The mix starts of at 128bpm and builds steadily to 161bpm. It's around 142 by the split at track 29.

Enjoy!

Dunfyboy's Mostly Electro House Mix

Download from MediaFire.

130bpm throughout.

It should be called "Electro House Mix 2" as that was the intention when I started this mix, but  it sort of loses it's electro edge with "The Launch", gets it back a bit with "Something Good" and loses all credibility with " I Was Made..." but it does go well with The Cube Guys version of Baba O'Riley so it sneaks in under the wire.

Enjoy.

Dunfyboy's House Mix

Download from MediaFire.

Like D&B, House has never been where the heart lies with me. But, like D&B, I have been known to dabble. So here's some house mixes for you. A couple of electro-house mixes coming up, but first a housey-house mix. Does that make sense?

I first heard "My Life Muzik" by Thee Maddkatt Courtship on Jon Carter's "7 Live" mix CD. There, the vocals were laid over Felix Da Housecat's "Enter Lite Exit Nite". I always loved the start of that mix and always wanted to use "My Life Muzik" in a mix. Here I've used it with "Do You Remember House?" by Blaze, another vocal heavy track and I'm really pleased with the outcome.

This is followed by two of the biggest and best house tunes ever IMHO. Firstly, "To Be In Love" from Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez & Louie Vega under their Masters At Work guise. Next is The Kings Of Tomorrow's "Finally". excellent vocals on both of these tunes from India & Julie McKnight respectively.

Then there's some more stuff :-)

Enjoy.

Dunfyboy's Drum & Bass Mix

Worst mix ever.

No, not really, but it's been a pain in the arse.

You know what it's like, I'm sure it's happened to everyone; you finish a mix just before you go abroad to watch your footy team get humped by a 2nd division Swedish outfit in a UEFA cup qualifier. "I'll write down the tracklist when I get back. It'll still be fresh in my mind". Bollocks you will. 9 months later you decide to post the mix to your podcast and think "Shit! No tracklist!". So, having spent this morning swearing a lot, and this afternoon listening to hundreds of tunes and going "No, that's not it" or "That's the right tune, but not the right mix", here it is, complete with the fucking tracklist.

Hope it was worth the effort.

I've never been a huge fan of Jungle or Drum & Bass, but a lot of rave and early hardcore tracks had jungle elements in them so there's always been some I liked. It seemed to me that most jungle producers & DJs seemed to concentrate so hard on the breakbeat they forgot to put a decent tune in there too. Anyway, mid-nineties I gave up on D&B and stuck to hardcore & happy hardcore, but always sort of drifted back every once in a while, like in 1998 when I heard "Walk This Land" on "Lock, Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels", DJ Marky & XRS's version of "Carolina Carol Bela" in 2002, or when Pendulum released "Hold Your Colour" in 2005.

So, here it is. Some tunes from way back, some more up to date.

Enjoy.

Dunfyboy's Something A Little Different Mix

Download from MediaFire.

This mix came about after I was messing about with some old indie stuff (Stone Roses, The Soup Dragons, Primal Scream, Beats International) and grew from there.

It kind of goes all over the place but I quite like that. I'm particularly happy getting Magik Roundabout's "Everlasting Day" into a mix as it was a real favourite of mine back in the day, a great feel-good summer tune. Its cover is the basis for the artwork for this mix. I'm also pleased getting Jimi into a mix and I really like the way "Son Of A Preacher Man" mixes into "For What It's Worth". The "Springfield Effect", I guess you could call it. Simple things please simple minds.

Apologies for the obvious mixes ("He Got Game" into "For What It's Worth", 2 versions of "No Woman, No Cry") but at least I managed to avoid "Hits From The Bong" after "Son Of A Preacher Man".

You might recognise "Heartbeats" by José González from the Sony Bravia advert with the bouncing balls. It's mixed into 2 Deep's "Life Party". It was used in a Reebok advert in 1991/92. It's the one with a white line across the screen. It gets hurdled over, then it's a lane marker in a sprint, then it's the bar for the high jump, then it's the finishing tape in a race or something like that. I haven't explained it very well (and no one I know remembers it) but if you saw it all those years ago you would know what I'm on about.

Anyway, download, sit back and enjoy.
