Dunfyboy Stirs It Up

Right click here to download this mix.

Inspired by Basstronix' Bass Breaks Vol 2 (which you check out over at Stuzzy Daz's blog), here's my own dubby, reggae, ska, breaks type thing, ending with a bit of a rave up. At least it'll make a nice change from all those awful carols we've heard non-stop for the past month (or more).

Merry Christmas.

PT RIP

In case you haven't noticed, PearsonTowers.com is no more. A sad loss to us all, but the you can fill the void a little at Stuzzy Daz's new blog Mixes For The Masses. He's even started a forum where you can post your own links to mixes.

I've been working on a new blog too, posting all my dance music CDs from the 90's. It's still a work in progress but you can check it out here

And thanks to all who have left comments recently. It's good to know I'm not talking to myself.

*****EDIT*****

...and it's back. Don't know if its back for good, but at least its back for now.

Dunfyboy's Hybrid Mix

Here's the link.

I see plenty of downloads, but no comments. C'mon peeps, play the game. Good, bad or indifferent, let me know what you think.

Hybrid's name kept cropping up when I was digging through remixes for my last mix so I thought I'd do a mix dedicated to them. Like their countryman High Contrast, they've knocked out a few decent tunes of their own but it's their remixes that really do it for me. Here's 19 tracks either by them or remixed by them all mixed together by yours truly.

Enjoy, and leave some fucking comments!!!

01 - Hybrid - I Choose Noise
02 - Hybrid - Snyper

Dunfyboy's Remix Mix

Click here to download this mix from Rapidshare.

I've had this mix in mind for a while after stumbling across I Prefer The Remix where I found a mp3 of Jon Carter's remix of Cubik (well, it saved me ripping it from the 12").

Some remixes are a complete waste of time. They might just change the beat slightly or have the breakdown run for a bit longer or stick a 4-on-the-floor drumbeat over a rock song to make a club remix. You'll often hear a "breaks" remix is just the original tune with amen breaks laid over the top. Speed it up and you've got a drum and bass remix (like the Rcola remix, but I couldn't help myself). On the other hand, some can prove more popular than the original.

Timo Mass' remix of Doom's Night is the one everyone thinks of when you mention the song, so much so that other remixes are based on this version rather than the original. Jam & Spoon's remix of Age Of Love became the definitive version and has appeared on more compilations than the original mix and, as you'll see with Ed Solo's take on it, sometimes you can totally reinvent an old song.

You might even find a remix gets overlooked because it's on the flipside of a classic. That's why I've used the Morning Time Mix of You've Got The Love. It never stood a chance against Erin's Bootleg Mix. The Now Voyager Remix is another example of breathing new life into an old song.

I'm sure there are other remixes you think may have been on this mix. I did consider Born Slippy Nuxx, but the Nuxx version bares no resemblance to the original so I've always thought of it as an original song in it's own right.

Hopefully there's something here you've never heard before. There's a lot more out there than the main mix they keep hammering on MTV or Radio One. Sometimes you have to dig a little deeper, and remixes like these are your reward.

Enjoy.

Dunfyboy's R&S Records Mix

It's been a while since I upped a new mix, and the best part of 6 months since I upped an old school mix, so this is well overdue. I thought I'd pay tribute to the Belgian label R&S Records, so that means a bit of house, a bit of acid, a bit of new beat and plenty of good old faceless techno bollocks. They were one of the biggest labels back in the day so you'll recognise some of the names and tracks but hopefully there'll be something you've not heard before (or not for a while, at least).

Dunfyboy's High Contrast Mix

Download here.

I'm no huge fan of D&B but I dabble once in a while. I wanted to do a quick mix so I figured High Contrast was as good a target as any, especially as most of his tunes are the same tempo (173bpm, if you're interested). Makes it a bit easier. High Contrast's own tunes are pretty good, but it's his remixes that first brought him to my attention. So here's 26 tracks, some by him, some remixed by him, all jammed into a 80 minute mix by me.

It ends with his remix of MGMT's Time To Pretend which is, to say the least, fucking awesome. I've listened to it on a loop on more than one occasion. Even my girlfriend likes it. The only problem is, as it isn't an official release, the only way I could get hold of it was to strip the audio from a YouTube someone had posted where they had upped a recording of it getting played on Annie Mac's Mashup on Radio 1. It had Radio 1 idents and Annie talking to High Contrast over it so I had to re-edit it. To save you the trouble, I've included a stand alone copy of my re-edited version in the zip file. It clips a little, but unless someone has a better version it's probably as good as you'll get.

Dunfyboy's Ninja Mix

Link to MediaFire.

There's plenty I don't like about Ninja Tune. Playing the same drum loop over and over for 5 minutes with the odd sample or synth thrown in for a couple of bars isn't downbeat, it's just boring. Dropping a drum beat that's four times as fast as the rest of the track might be clever or innovative if the track was decent to start with, otherwise it just comes across as a self-indulgent waste of time. I swear a lot of there stuff would never have got past the demo stage if it wasn't on Ninja. Some of their artists just don't do anything for me, but because they're a "cool" label, there's always going to be some people (you know who you are!) who will buy it.

So, why do a mix of Ninja Tune? Because some of their stuff is as good as you'll find anywhere. This mix has all my favourite tracks from Ninja and their off-shoots Big Dada and Ntone. Besides, I want to be cool too :)

Of course, this is all just my opinion. You might think this whole mix is crap. But what if it's not? Get downloading and leave a comment either way.

Western Digital suck balls

Well, it wasn't the enclosure, it was the hard disc itself that was the problem.

I installed it in a new enclosure and managed to get Vista to recognise it (XP still won't have anything to do with it). I've managed to rescue most of my music, but I reckon about 100 gigs is gone, never to be seen again. Thanks a fucking bunch WD.

This is obviously going to have an impact on upcoming mixes - uploading isn't going to happen as frequently as I'd like. But, at least the site will continue. Yes, MyPodcast.com is (kinda) working again.

I received an email towards the end of the year from First Beat Media, the company that owns MyPodcast.com. They asked me to become a Mod on the forum and contact the techs when a problem cropped up. I've no great intentions of doing all the Moddy stuff (and the forums aren't really busy enough to warrant it anyway) but at least the techs will now know when there are problems with the site.

Nice to have some good news for a change.

No mixes this month

No new mixes in January, been having computer issues. Last October, my media hard drive went up in smoke, literally. My own fault, I plugged the wrong power adapter into the back. Not to worry, I had a back up. After this, I decided to reinstall Windows on my PC, during which the PC's HD failed. It was so bad I had to get a tech to fix it for me (thanks June).

Now, my Western Digital My Book has decided not to play. Time to worry, this is the back up. Not sure if it's the HD or the enclosure that's the problem. I'm hoping it's the enclosure, otherwise nearly 500 Gigs of music, vids and docs go bye bye. The disc spins OK, but when I connect it to my PC I get write save errors and Explorer freezes. I've no other SATA enclosures lying about so I've ordered a new one. Fingers crossed.

They say things come in 3's. I don't know who "they" are, but I could do without anymore HD failures. It sucks too much.
